Profoto Pro-B3: 750 Ws on battery, and a flash tube you can change on set
The Profoto Pro-B3 has joined the flash inventory as a single head, as a two-head kit with spare batteries and Air Remote, and with spare batteries available separately.
It delivers 750 Ws entirely on battery, over an 11 f-stop range from 0.8 Ws to full power in tenths of a stop. No cable, no generator, no mains.
Freeze mode, and what it is for
Three flash modes change the behaviour of the light rather than just its label:
- Eco — the working default. Recycles 0.01 to 2.0 seconds, runs cooler.
- Boost — full power on demand, 0.01 to 2.3 seconds.
- Freeze — flash duration down to 1/75,000 s (t0.5), the shortest in its category.
At 1/75,000 s a splash of water separates into droplets and fabric in motion holds its edge. It is the mode that makes the difference between a photograph of movement and a photograph of blur.
Colour temperature holds at 6300 K ±100 K in Eco, so a sequence stays consistent.
A working day away from power
The Li-Ion battery gives around 250 full-power flashes, or 60 minutes of continuous LED, and it can be charged while in use — so a long day does not stop for a battery change.
The modelling light is a 56 W LED with up to 6,300 lumens, bright enough to be useful on location rather than only in a dark studio.
The detail that matters for rental
The quartz flash tubes are user-replaceable. A tube can be changed on set in a minute rather than the head going out of service for the rest of the shoot — which on a location two hours from Naples is the difference between a delay and a lost day.
The housing is rubberised and built for the conditions action and location photographers actually work in.
On set
Beam angle is 65°, field angle 106°, with an f-stop of 22.6 at two metres at ISO 100 bare, rising to 45.4 with a Magnum reflector. Triggering is over AirX with TTL and HSS, remote to 300 m, and the head takes the full Profoto modifier range.
