A 24-inch production monitor has joined the video department: the SmallHD Cine 24, a 4K high-bright display supplied with sunhood and V-mount adapter.
The number that matters here is 1350 nits of sustained brightness. Not peak, not a marketing figure measured on a white square — sustained. It is roughly five times a normal editing monitor, and it is the reason SmallHD states the Cine 24 can be used outdoors without a viewing tent at all.
Why brightness is the whole point here
Anyone who has run a video village on the Amalfi Coast in July knows the problem. By eleven in the morning the client cannot see the frame, the director is squinting under a black cloth, and every creative decision quietly moves to “we’ll look at it later”. A tent goes up, it takes half an hour, and it blows over.
At 1350 nits the image survives direct daylight. Decisions get made on set — on framing, on exposure, on whether the shot is finished — instead of being deferred to a screening days later. We supply the sunhood anyway, because on a white terrace at midday every bit of shading helps, but the monitor does not depend on it.
Colour you can trust
Brightness is useless if the image lies. The Cine 24 covers 100% of DCI-P3 with 10-bit colour depth at 3840 × 2160, and calibrates through PageOS with Calman support.
That means log footage and creative LUTs can be evaluated properly on set: the DP sees what the grade will look like, not an approximation. For productions shooting for international clients who expect a colour-managed pipeline, this is the difference between a monitor for looking and a monitor for judging.
The usual toolset is built in — waveform, vectorscope, false colour, EL Zone, focus assist, high-resolution 3D LUT overlays, custom frame guides.
Built for a video village
Four 12G-SDI inputs and four 12G-SDI outputs, plus HDMI in and out, carry genuine single-cable 4K and let the signal pass through to a recorder or a second display without a distribution amplifier. With PageOS multi-view the monitor shows several 4K sources at once, so a multi-camera setup, the DIT and the director can share one display rather than three.
At 7.5 kg it is light for its size, which matters more than it sounds: a video village that takes ten minutes to build and strike is a village that actually gets moved when the sun does. It ships with handle, feet and transport screen protector, so it travels as a unit.
Power on location
The Cine 24 draws under 100 W and accepts 12–34 V through a 3-pin XLR. We supply it with the V-mount adapter plate, so away from mains it runs on the same standard V-mount batteries already on the camera cart — no separate power solution to organise.
The dual inputs are hot-swappable: a battery can be changed without the screen going dark mid-take, which matters on the one display the client is watching. Two 2-pin accessory outputs on the chassis also feed a transmitter or a small recorder from the same source, instead of each needing its own battery.
