The Profoto B30 has joined the flash inventory, available as a single head or as a location kit with two heads, two spare batteries, two chargers and an Air Remote.
It is a battery monolight with 500 Ws of flash power and an 11 f-stop range, from 0.5 Ws up to full — adjustable in tenths of a stop. In practice that means one light covers everything from a whisper of fill on a face to a main source that holds its own against Mediterranean sun.
Three lights in one body
The B30 has three flash modes, and they are not marketing labels — each changes what the light actually does:
- Eco — the default. Recycles from 0.01 to 1.8 seconds, runs cooler, extends the life of the head. This is where the light sits on a normal shooting day.
- Boost — full power available on demand, recycling 0.01 to 2.1 seconds.
- Freeze — shortens the flash to 1/21,100 s (t0.5) to stop movement dead. Hair, water, fabric, a jump: this is the mode that makes them readable.
Colour temperature in Eco holds at 6000 K ±100 K, so a sequence stays consistent frame to frame without correction in post.
A modelling light that is also a video light
The built-in LED is 40 W, up to 5000 lumens, adjustable from 2800 to 7000 K with CRI above 94.
That is a genuine bi-colour continuous source, not a dim modelling bulb. For a shoot that alternates stills and short motion — increasingly the norm on campaigns — the same head covers both without swapping fixtures.
The detail that matters for rental
The flash tube is user-replaceable. A tube can be changed on set in a minute, rather than the head coming out of service and the shoot losing a light.
For a production working on a location two hours from Naples, that difference is the difference between a delay and a non-event.
On location
The battery gives around 220 full-power flashes, and far more at the power levels most work actually uses. The head weighs 2.1 kg with the stand adapter and measures 25.5 cm, so it goes on a light stand, a boom or a C-stand arm without ballast.
Triggering is over AirX or through the 3.5 mm sync port, with TTL and HSS supported, and control from the Profoto app over Bluetooth. The OCF mount accepts the full Profoto modifier range — softboxes, umbrellas, beauty dishes, grids.
Recycling is around 13% faster than the B10X it replaces.
