The NiSi Black Mist filter set in the 4 x 5.65 cine format covers the 1/8, 1/4 and 1/2 densities for use in a professional matte box. Black mist lifts the deepest shadows a fraction and blooms highlights, softening the clinical rendering of a modern digital sensor and restoring the gradual falloff associated with film. Having all three densities on a production matters because the correct strength depends entirely on how much bright light is in frame: an interior with practicals needs far less than a daylight exterior to read the same. The 4 x 5.65 format stacks with ND and polarising filters in a multi-stage matte box.
