A black mist filter lifts the deepest shadows slightly and blooms highlights outward, which takes the clinical edge off a modern high-resolution sensor and restores a cinematic falloff that is difficult to reproduce convincingly in grading. The three densities matter because the effect scales with the light in the frame: 1/8 is a subtle correction for daylight exteriors, 1/2 is a strong stylistic choice for night interiors with practicals in shot.
